Please read also Safety, and Safety: whips
The position of the bottom, of course, will depend on where you plan to hit. For hitting on the buttocks, you could try any position in Positions 2 thru 12. For hitting on the back, the best position is standing, leaning slightly forward. The back should not be too arched, because it increases the risk for hitting on the spine. See Positions 13, 14 and 15. Or you can also use the laying positions on the preceding pages.
As in the cane and other instruments, the bottom could be free or bound. If free, s/he will have to submit to the pain, accepting it voluntarily.
Binding the sub restricts her involuntary movements under the pain, reducing the risk of accidents. The more stationary the target, the better you can control where to hit.
For me, an actual whipping has to be on the bare back, standing and bound, just like in the movies, but of course, you should do it as you enjoy it.
I'll describe the positions and movements for right handed tops. If you are left handed, you should change left for right. And as I always do, I will suppose that the scene is about a man hitting a woman. Change the genres as needed.
The position of the top depends on the desired results. If you plan to caress and just give different sensation to your bottom's skin, any position will do.
For actually whipping, you should stand to the left side of the bottom, with your left leg at front, pointing to the sub, the right to the side, and the knees slightly bent (more if you are hitting low, on the buttocks of you sub) and at the right distance from your target.
You should have room for your arm and the whip on your right side, above, and back and also in the left, if you are going to use backhand throws. Hitting onlookers, furniture or the lamp hanging from the ceiling is considered bad form, and for sure will not earn you a reputation of master of the whip.
You should be in a well-balanced stand, one that allows you to move freely from one side to the other and crouch or stand upright as needed, for allowing you to change the placement of the strokes, and one that gives the most comfortable position to move freely the arm you will use to hit.
All whips are held normally in the fist, as you hold a tennis racket. The hand wraps naturally over the handle, with the thumb on the opposite side from the other fingers.

You should hold all whips near the end of the handle, unless for practical reasons you prefer to shorten the whip by holding it a little up, nearer the tails.
With floggers, especially, you should find the point of the handle that gives you better balance allowing for an almost effortlessly handling.
Your grip should be firm (only the tails should fly and hit your bottom. Throwing the full whip, handle and all, is not elegant), but your wrist and arm should be relaxed. Look for a fluid movement of the arm. It will improve your accuracy and control.
