| Whalebone (English) |
(misnomer for baleen) A horny substance found in two rows of plates from 2 to 12 feet long attached along the upper jaw of whalebone whales and used esp. to stiffen stays or fans. It was made into round or flat strips. The round ones were used for the rod on riding crops or buggy whips and the flat ones for corsets. They are now replaced by plastic materials, but as they were handy, they were commonly used for punishment, the round ones as severe rods, and the flat ones as rulers or paddles.
