Rebenque (Spanish)(From the French raban, Dutch  raband, from ra 'yard' + band, is the rope that ties the sail to the yard).1)Whip made of leather or tarred hemp used to punish sailors. 2) In Argentina, it is the traditional riding (and fighting, and punishing) whip of the "gaucho" (the Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil cowboy). It consists of a rawhide wrapped wooden handle about 18 inches long with a thong made of a 2 inches wide rawhide strap a little longer than the handle. The handle is topped by a knob, and have a wrist strap. It can be embellished with gold and silver. See article
